When you first arrive in Malta, you might want to just chill out on the beach and admire the beautiful blue Mediterranean Sea. But there's so much more to this island nation. All over the island, you'll find great sports activities to try out and make your holiday all the more memorable!

A scenic ride through Golden Bay

In the north-west of the island, Golden Bay is a great spot to go to if you're an animal lover.

Here you'll find a riding school, where qualified instructors will lead you on a horseback trek around the surrounding area, with prices starting at €20 per person.

This is the perfect way to explore the rugged Maltese scenery. For the ultimate experience, check what time is the sunset on the day and go enjoy the picturesque views.

Explore nature in Majjistral

Staying in the north, why not explore one of the most beautiful parts of the island for free?

There is just one natural National Park on the main island, and here it is: the Majjistral Nature and History Park. Run by a group of volunteers, here you can enjoy nature walks.

The routes are around 4km long, and along the way a skilled guide will point out the most interesting sights. If you do not wish to have a guide, it is also possible. However, be aware of no entry and private zones.

Work on your swing in Marsa

Marsa's Par 68 golf course is a great place to play a round at any time of year, given the brilliant Maltese climate.

Green fees start at €44, but if not everyone in your group is into golf, there's also the option to just relax in the roomy restaurant and bar in the new clubhouse, admiring the views of the course.

You can also rent equipment at the location.

Go bowling in St Julians

Eden Superbowl, in the central area of St Julian's, is a fun destination for family groups who want to get away from the burning midday heat and try something a little bit different. Open to all ages, prices start at €6-13 per person.

On Fridays, you can also go and experience disco bowling, just opposite the cinema in St Julian's.

A great, fun and social way to start your evening pre-drinking before you go to paceville.

Ride a Segway in Dingli

If the hot weather means that you'd rather not walk, Segway tours are available starting at €49, on both main islands.

Dingli, on the west coast, is a great place to take one of these tours, as you'll have the chance to see some truly spectacular views without tiring yourself out.

Segway tours are also available in Birgu, in the capital, Valletta and other locations.

Get in a go-kart in Ta'Qali

If you're a budding speed enthusiast, head to Ta'Qali and give the open-air go-kart track a go! This is another family-friendly option, although groups of thrill seeking adults will also enjoy the fun of speeding and competing around the track.

Prices start at €12 on Saturdays, or €15 the rest of the week. Helmets and any additional gear required will be provided at the location.

Go paintballing in Kalkara

There are a few paintball locations around the island, but one of the best is in the south eastern village of Kalkara.

A great place to go if you want to spend an afternoon shooting at your friends and family...all in good fun, of course!

Prices start at €25 per person and may vary depending on group size.

See the islands on two wheels

This has become one of the most popular sports activities in the country for tourists and locals alike. On both Malta and Gozo, there are plenty of options if you'd like to rent a bike and make your own way around the islands. Explore hidden trails or visit secluded villages.

In the Golden Sands Resort, you can sign up for guided tours, but if you're more of an independent type, pick up a map and get going! Prices vary in different locations.
